Colorado Round-Up

The Swat Fencing team are back to resuming their normal, average lives of Winter break after a jam-packed, exciting weekend of extreme bonding and fencing in Colorado Springs this past January 5-9.  On Thursday, our roster of 20 (flying from almost ten states, including Hawai’i) converged on one of Colorado Springs’ three Hampton Inns.  It was up and at ‘em early on Friday morning for a brief session of altitude adjustment and shaking off the rust at the Academy.  After a couple of hours of bouting and drills, we chose University Village for ample lunch options, where “The Paradox of Choice” (#keepingitinthefamily) did not seem to limit decisiveness (as Panera, Chipotle, and Noodles & Co. were clear favorites).  Later that afternoon, we explored the U.S. Olympic Training Center, where we all held our mouths agape as our 5’2″, 120 lbs. weightlifter tour guide declared that she intakes 5,000 calories per day.  Our day ended with an “Opa!” at My Big Fat Gr∑∑k Restaurant, where the waitstaff broke out into exuberant dancing and fireblowing like clockwork on the hour.

Saturday was competition day, and we marched (well, marched, then collapsed) onto the bleachers in the Cadet Gym at 6:45 AM.  Competition was steep, as we first faced off against Stanford, Air Force, and Notre Dame men/Northwestern women, respectively. As the afternoon progressed, we met up and had a good match-up with our fellow club, the University of Florida.  We got a burst of energy into the last round against UC San Diego, after pummeling Caltech (19-8 Men, 22-5 Women).  Our last round against UCSD was energetic, but ultimately, their top 20 powerhouse team proved superior.  However, throughout the day we saw impressive victories against top 20 schools, propelled by incomparable cheerleading from alum Jing Yi Ng ’11, come from graduating epeeist Morgan Sulerzyski, epeeist-gone-foilist-for-a-match Josselyn Tufino (posting a nailbiting 5-4 victory in OT against Stanford’s Conway), foilists Galen Rask and Emily Eder, and sabreist Kevin Buczkowski.  At the end of the day, we walked out of the gym at 7:30 PM satisfied and with dinner on our minds.  After negotiating the treacherous snow-glazed streets, we crashed at the hotel, but not before putting down a respectable ~400 sq. inches of pizza (for detailed calculation breakdown and topping details, please e-mail Mark).

Sunday was, rightfully so, our lazy day, as many of us overslept the continental breakfast, and rolling out of bed just in time for a trip to Garden of the Gods, a city park of C. Springs. The team hiked around and explored the geologic masterpiece, appreciating the Sunny and 50° day, although some were disappointed that the segway tours and rock climbing were not being offered. Sunday concluded uneventfully and Monday saw fencers re-dispersing around the 50 states for the final week of R&R before returning to the usual stomping grounds on Monday, the 16th.  So there it is, not necessarily as concise as desired, but what can I say, my hyper-efficiency is about a month out of conditioning…
