Courtesy of Margo!
For everyone:
USFA promo video featuring great fencing!
Foil:
USA’s Lee Kiefer at the Pan Am games fencing a very strong Canadian.
Margo: Watch how they manipulate distance to trip each other up with counter attacks, fleches, infighting, etc. Kiefer is down by at least two points going int the third period. See how she changes her tempo and distance.
Lee Kiefer at the Pan Am games
Andrea Baldini vs Sheng Lei
Margo: Baldini loses the bout, but nevertheless watch his footwork tempo and how skillfully he hides the start of his attacks (mostly).
Epee:
Last year’s Rio World Cup starring the great Hungarian champion Emese Szász against a very talented French fencer, Lauren Rembi.
Margo: Observe how they are always moving, back and forth. They glide in quickly to provoke and quickly glide back if they don’t see an opportunity. Notice use of the fleche.

Tournament Format
The event consists of three components. The first round on Saturday is three pools of up to 13 squads in each weapon event. Each pool fences round robin in the A-A B-B C-C format. The results of that round do two things: they seed the championship bracket for Sunday, and they qualify individuals to the individual finals, which happen after the first round is complete on Saturday.
Sunday there’s a bracket of 32 squads (in each weapon event) which is fenced out to every place. It’s not an elimination: if a squad loses in the first stage, it’s in the 17-32 bracket, or if it wins, it’s in the 1-16 bracket. Each subsequent stage narrows the squads into smaller sections of the bracket until they’re fencing the squad most closely matched with them, whether it’s for 1st and 2nd place or 31st and 32nd. So all 32 squads get 5 matches (32, 16, 8, 4, 2).
The Sunday matches are fenced like dual meets (squad A’s 3 athletes fence squad B’s 3 for 9 bouts total) but only until one squad wins 5 of the 9 bouts (to decision)

SAC is in a few days…here’s the format, courtesy of Coach Marshal Davis!
NCAA round robin in pools. Separate by squad. Fence all teams, best of 9 5 touch bouts, fence even after 5 wins. Then all squads seeded into DE. Also best of 9 but stop after 5 wins. Do that from bracket of 16 until gold. For individual, top 8 per weapon based on win percentage in pools only (with minimum 70-80% of bouts fenced to be eligible). Individual championships are a single pool of 8 (seven 5-touch bouts per fencer). Each weapon has 9-12 teams and 2 pools, so total bouts per slot range from 9-15 for pools.
