The protection of our environment is not just a moral or quality-of-life issue – it’s crucial to our country’s prosperity, health, and security. That’s why I’ve included Environmental and Energy security as one of the five pillars of national security. Our energy policy requires a comprehensive approach that takes the best advantage of all types of energy, while recognizing the need to accelerate the transition to alternative, clean, and renewable sources.

Rep. Joe Sestak’s town hall meeting at Swarthmore served as a great opportunity for direct student and community interaction and dialogue with an elected official. He even stayed overtime for a half hour to answer questions! The local bread and cheese were scrumptious too.
More info to come soon. Here are some photographs for the time being…

The Swarthmore EJ (Environmental Justice) team has collaborated with residents of Ruth L. Bennett Homes in Chester, PA, and Teens4Good to create a community garden:
The Chester Garden Project has stemmed from our conversations with Chester community leaders and residents, who have expressed their concerns about this lack of fresh food. We agreed that a community garden was an ideal, feasible solution to the situation. The project incorporates themes of environmental justice, public health, education and community development. Residents will gain access to quality, home-grown produce and in so doing promote both environmental and human health. We see this project as socially sustainable by serving as both an educational tool about nutrition and environmental sustainability and by cultivation a stronger intergenerational community among participants in the garden. Through the process of maintaining a community garden, residents will be empowering themselves to organize around issues plaguing their community.
